Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 2026
1. Overview
WasteAI ("we", "our", or "the app") is a waste sorting tool that uses AI to classify items from photos. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and what we do not do with it.
2. Data We Collect
- Location data: If you grant permission, your device's geolocation coordinates are used to determine your city. This is used solely to apply the correct local recycling rules. We do not store your coordinates.
- Photos: Images you capture or upload are compressed on your device and sent to OpenAI's API for classification. We do not store your photos on our servers.
3. How We Use Your Data
Location data is used only to select the appropriate city recycling rules for your scan. Photos are sent to OpenAI solely to identify and classify the item for waste sorting. Neither is used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond providing the classification result.
4. Third Parties
- OpenAI: Photos are transmitted to OpenAI's API for processing. OpenAI's use of data submitted via API is governed by their Privacy Policy. As of the time of writing, OpenAI does not use API-submitted data to train models by default.
- BigDataCloud: If location permission is granted, your coordinates are sent to BigDataCloud's reverse geocoding API to determine your city name. No account or personal data is required.
5. Data Retention
We do not maintain a database of user photos, locations, or scan results. Each request is processed in real time and discarded. No personal data is persisted on our servers.
6. Children's Privacy
WasteAI is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
